Learning Story – Alifiya
I’ve always been extremely interested in arts, crafts and DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects. I would describe myself as primarily a crochet artist. My mom is my inspiration and also the person who drove me to pick up crochet by example. She was a real pro at it and just by being around her as she made her creations, I started picking up her techniques. Even in those early days, whenever I was free I would keep trying new crochet ideas.
Later, I got married and shifted to Bahrain and in the hustle-and-bustle of marriage I fell out of my crochet habit for a bit. Once things had settled, out-of-the-blue I had the inspiration that I could make good use of my childhood crochet skill and start a home-based venture from it. This was three years ago and it led to the inception of my venture AARA’s.
Challenging myself constantly is what drives me to keep learning and improving. I’ve been lucky that my customers give me great but tough projects to work on which takes me out of my comfort zone and forces me to adapt and pick up new skills. At the end of the day, I feel no one is perfect and there is an opportunity to learn something new everyday.
Lately, I’ve become extremely interested in Amigurumi which is a Japenese technique that uses crochet techniques to knit small and soft toys.
