The Zentangle® Method is an easy to learn and a fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These patterns are called tangles. Zentangle® was found by a monk Rick Roberts & an artist Maria Thomas in USA which is why it’s a mix of Meditation (Zen) & Creation (Tangle).

If you enjoy this art form & have done the beginners class then this course is for you!! It’s an uplifting project designed to uplift your spirits and make you feel happier!

Required Materials/Equipment:

  • 1 Zentangle Zendala Tile or 4.5″ White watercolour paper, 300 gsm or higher
  • 1 Zentangle Bijou Tile or 2″ White watercolour paper, 300 gsm or higher
  • 1 Pigma® Micron® 01 or PN, Black (or any other 0.25mm nib size black pen)
  • 1 Pigma® Micron® 01 or PN, Brown (optional)
  • 1 Gelly Roll® Metallic, Gold or White Moonlight
  • 1 Graphite pencil

  • 1 or 2 Colored Pencils (optional)
  • 2 Tortillons/Blending stump/Earbud (One for shading with graphite and one for highlights)
  • 1 Printout of Markus Operandus (will be mailed by instructor)
  • 1 60” Piece of Thread or Fine String
  • 1 Needle (The right size for the thread or string you are using)
  • 1 Pair of Scissors

What techniques will be taught?

  • This class was designed by Zentangle® as a fun, playful, and uplifting project.
  • This project will take you through all the steps of creating a Zentangle inspired hot air balloon using the Markus Operandus, a Zendala Tile and a Bijou Tile.
  • The Markus Operandus is used as the measuring device. This marking device designed by Zentangle Inc. was specifically designed as a tool to create different templates on Zentangle Zendalas and other Zentangle tiles. This is a great way for students to have somewhat measured out spaces but also allows room for hand-drawn lines.
  • As we like to avoid using erasers or rulers in Zentangle, the results are looser, more organic and capture a more hand-drawn look, while still achieving the reference of the symbol.
